German chemical industry mood rises for second straight month in September, Ifo says
The business climate index rose to 5.5 points as supply disruptions and stronger specialty chemicals demand lifted expectations, Ifo said.
- On Friday, the Ifo Institute reported Germany's chemical industry business climate improved for a second consecutive month in September, with the index reaching 5.5 points, entering positive territory for the first time this year.
- Supply disruptions in the Middle East and Asia bolstered the struggling sector, lifting prices and spurring restocking, with basic chemicals and petrochemicals benefiting most directly, said Ifo industry expert Anna Wolf.
- Wolf told Reuters that "the boost seems to last longer than initially expected, it remains temporary," citing structural disadvantages at German production sites and ongoing job cuts that keep the recovery fragile.
- German chemical stocks outperformed the broader European chemicals index, which rose about 13% this year, with Evonik leading gains on takeover speculation while Lanxess lagged after warning of weak core markets.
- Specialty chemicals face more durable support from expanding semiconductor production and the global artificial intelligence boom, while companies exposed to defence and infrastructure are beginning to benefit from rising public investment.
