The International Energy Agency (IEA) is calling for greater use of the potential of geothermal energy. By 2050, 15 percent of global electricity demand could be covered by geothermal energy, according to a report published in Paris. With such an expansion of capacity to up to 800 gigawatts, as much electricity could be generated as India and the USA consume together annually. But to achieve this, costs would first have to be reduced.

Bis 2050 könnten 15 Prozent des weltweiten Strombedarfs durch Erdwärme gedeckt werden, heißt es in einem Bericht, der in Paris veröffentlicht wurde. Mit so einem Kapazitätsausbau auf bis zu 800 Gigawatt könnte so viel Strom erzeugt werden, wie Indien und USA jährlich zusammen verbrauchen. Dazu müssten aber zunächst die Kosten gesenkt werden.
