Boundary Waters to Reopen Select Areas to Visitors
Officials are discussing reopening options as hundreds of firefighters battle blazes across the wilderness, the Forest Service said.
Superior National Forest officials will reopen select Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness entry points in Cook County to visitors on Monday, July 27, after the forest closed entirely on July 14 due to widespread wildfires.
A lightning storm on July 14 triggered a surge of over 25 wildfires across the forest, prompting the total closure of the 1,098,000-acre wilderness area to ensure public safety.
Three active fires currently burn within the wilderness: the Bear Trap Fire , the Thumb Fire , and the Little Knife Fire .
All permits for overnight wilderness camping remain cancelled through Wednesday, July 29, as officials cite significant risk to the public and firefighters, affecting about 1,900 wilderness campsites.
Barring significant wildfire activity over the upcoming weekend, Acting Superior National Forest Supervisor Drew Stroberg said the area might partially open for overnight camping next week to balance visitor desires with safety.
