Films from Ron Murphy, Marie Clements programmed at TIFF
TIFF’s Centrepiece lineup includes 54 films from about 50 countries, with Canadian titles and new projects starring Christopher Walken and Michelle Yeoh.
- The Toronto International Film Festival added Canadian movies to its main program on Tuesday, including "Back in Black" starring Christopher Walken. Directed by Ron Murphy, the film portrays a struggling mortician in a wellness-obsessed town where death has become obsolete.
- Featuring 54 films from about 50 countries, the Centrepiece program showcases international cinema alongside domestic selections. Canadian doctor-turned-director Roshan Sethi's "The Surgeon" stars Michelle Yeoh as a kidnapped surgeon performing a final operation.
- TIFF also programmed "Smudge the Blades," a dramedy about an under-18 Indigenous hockey team from northern Alberta featuring Helms. Additionally, "How We Stand," directed by Métis playwright and filmmaker Marie Clements, explores two sisters separated by tragedy.
- Latvian-Canadian author and director David Bezmozgis is premiering the adaptation of his 2014 novel "The Betrayers." The film depicts a disgraced Israeli politician and the man who denounced him to the KGB.
- Also heading to the festival is the American film "Trash Mountain," directed by Kris Rey. The project stars and was co-written by comedian Caleb Hearon, expanding TIFF's international selections.
