Pennsylvania Family Makes Prehistoric Discovery While Searching for Seashells on the Jersey Shore
Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center confirmed the fossilized tooth as a once-in-a-lifetime find from an extinct giant shark.
A Pennsylvania family vacationing at Sea Isle City, New Jersey, discovered a rare fossilized megalodon tooth while searching for shells on the beach.
Extinct roughly 3.6 million years ago, the megalodon was a giant shark reaching up to 80 feet in length and weighing up to 94 tons.
Mike Bowers noticed something unusual inside a rock while shelling and called his son, Bo, to help retrieve the fossil with his smaller hand.
Cape May Whale Watch and Research Center experts confirmed the fossil is a megalodon tooth, calling it a "once-in-a-lifetime find."
Described as a "once-in-a-lifetime find" by the research center, the Bowers family intends to keep the tooth as a permanent souvenir from their discovery.
