Fake Campaign Signs Pop up in B.C. Riding on Election Eve
Binnema said the fake signs used his photo and the wrong color green, and he notified Elections BC about the unauthorized campaign material.
On Friday, October 23, Green Party candidate Tim Binnema reported 100 to 200 unauthorized campaign signs appeared throughout Surrey-Fleetwood, just one day before final B.C. provincial voting.
The fake signs appeared alongside other political messaging, including posters asking "Why a snap election?" and "Vote NDP out," featuring Binnema's photo "obviously ripped from the website."
These signs falsely claimed authorization by Binnema's financial agent, which he stated was not the case; Binnema works as an engineering manager and expressed shock discovering his image used without consent.
Binnema has notified Elections BC about the unauthorized signage, noting specific placement patterns near 152nd Street and 96th Avenue that suggest intentional positioning to influence voters.
In Surrey-Fleetwood, Conservative candidate Garry Purewal secured 8,691 votes to defeat NDP incumbent Jagrup Brar and Binnema's 1,030 votes; observers suggest the signs were an attempt to split the vote.
