F1 return puts RM1.3bil Malaysian economic prize in sight
Anwar said talks are at an early stage and any return would weigh national value against cost concerns, after Malaysia last hosted the race in 2017.
On Sunday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the government is actively discussing the return of Formula One racing to Malaysia, speaking after attending the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix at the Sepang International Circuit.
Malaysia previously hosted the Grand Prix for years but ended the event due to rising costs; the current race returned to Sepang following an agreement with the FIA due to geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
Sunday's race was delayed by heavy rain, with the medical car reporting a "significant amount of standing water" around the track before Red Bull's Max Verstappen claimed his first win this season.
Anwar stated that discussions regarding hosting have opened with Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali, though the matter remains in early stages requiring careful evaluation of cost implications.
While at the circuit, Anwar met Madani ticket holders, praising the lively atmosphere and local business support; tickets were priced at RM200 to provide Malaysians the opportunity to experience the three-day event.
