EU sanctions Russia's Wagner Group over fighting in Ukraine

The European Union has added the Wagner Group to its list of sanctioned entities and individuals for aiding Russia in its war in Ukraine.

The EU on Thursday added the Russian paramilitary organisation Wagner to the list of persons and entities sanctioned for “active participation in the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine”.

Wagner, which is leading Russian battles to try to capture the Ukrainian towns of Bakhmut and Soledar, had already been placed in February on another EU sanctions list for violating human rights and "destabilising" countries in Africa. The European Council, representing the 27 EU member states, said the new sanctions listing "completes" the previous one.

Persons and entities on the European Union sanctions list are subject to a freezing of assets in the EU, a travel ban and a ban on granting them funds.
