The European Commission president opened the door for Canada as an associate member, proposed an EU counterpart to NATO's Article 4 and got parliament to rise in deference to a Danish helicopter pilot.
In her speech on the state of the EU, the President of the Commission calls for an alert mechanism independent of Nato for security crises below the threshold of an armed attack. Canada is the first country to offer an associated membership.
