EU official announces 300-strong firefighting force to battle wildfires across Europe
The EU's rapid reaction firefighting force will include 300 personnel to address wildfires worsened by climate change, following 2025's worst wildfire season on record.
On Friday, EU Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra announced a continentwide force of 300 firefighters to battle wildfires, following Europe’s worst wildfire year, as ministers met in the Cypriot capital.
Climate researchers concluded that the 2025 wildfire season was Europe’s worst recorded year, with fires 22% more intense and winter rainfall dropping by about 14%, making dry air spells 13 times likelier.
Hoekstra said the rapid reaction force will include firefighters from the 27-member bloc and the decision to form the unit was made in the last year.
Acknowledging limits, Hoekstra did not specify the unit's base or summer wildfire season readiness and said it may need more personnel and equipment despite being a huge step forward compared to five years ago.
The 2025 season's toll—20 dead and 80,000 evacuated—shows hundreds of eastern Mediterranean wildfires driven by over 40 C heat burned more than 1 million hectares.
