STAT OF THE DAY
Statcast said De La Cruz’s relay throw reached 105.3 mph and erased Teoscar Hernandez’s inside-the-park home run attempt.
- On Tuesday, Cincinnati Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz threw out Los Angeles Dodgers right fielder Teoscar Hernandez at home plate during the third inning at Dodger Stadium, preventing a run.
- Hernandez attempted an inside-the-park home run after the ball bounced to the wall; Reds center fielder Dane Myers and left fielder JJ Bleday relayed to De La Cruz, who nailed the runner by about 10 feet.
- Statcast measured the relay at 105.3 mph, the second-fastest outfield assist since 2015; De La Cruz also demolished a 444-foot home run off pitcher Tarik Skubal earlier in the game.
- Broadcasters reacted with disbelief; TV analyst John Sadak called De La Cruz "a video game character," while Jim Day noted observers were "shocked at that throw" with "mouths open."
- Entering Tuesday's game with a.500 slash line and seven RBI in six September games, the two-time MLB All-Star De La Cruz continues as one of baseball's nightly highlights.
