LISBON - The tragic accident of the Glória funicular in Lisbon claimed 16 lives and injured two dozen a year ago, on September 3, 2025. The funicular, which began operating in 1885, connects the city center near Restauradores Square with the Bairro Alto district, which is known for its vibrant nightlife. On the fateful evening, the vast majority of passengers were tourists, and the victims came from seven countries in addition to Portugal.
This way, they avoid having to file lawsuits in civil courts, which involve paying, sometimes substantial, court fees right from the start. Those who have already received compensation are, in principle, excluded.
