Elections Chief Issues Warning About AI's Influence on Voters
Perrault urges labels to distinguish official election information from AI-generated material as voters increasingly turn to chatbots for candidate and voting details.
On Tuesday, Chief Electoral Officer Perrault warned that Canadians are increasingly relying on AI agents rather than the official Elections Canada website to find candidate names and polling information.
Perrault testified before the House and Commons science and research committee, which is studying the broader risks AI poses to Canadian institutions and the democratic process.
Noting that AI-generated information is sometimes unreliable or wrong, Perrault called for transparency labeling to help Canadians distinguish between official sources and AI-generated material.
These risks extend beyond election information to encompass foreign espionage, cybersecurity attacks, and the malicious use of AI-generated content, according to Perrault.
Elections Canada's Report published Nov 3, 2026 emphasizes the growing influence of AI-generated material on the democratic process, reflecting urgent need for institutional adaptation.
