ECP announces February 7 for Punjab LG polls, suspends K-P election process
The commission cited weather and administrative concerns and said the delay would ensure equal opportunities for candidates and voters.
On Thursday, the Election Commission of Pakistan scheduled the first phase of local government elections in Punjab for February 7, 2027, following a hearing by a four-member bench headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja.
The Punjab Chief Secretary initially sought an April date but later requested elections after January 20, 2027, citing administrative and weather constraints requiring two months for election arrangements.
Officials cited smog, dense fog, and unavailability of schoolteachers as primary reasons for delay, noting that weather conditions typically improve across the province after January 20.
Separately, the ECP suspended the electoral process in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa until further orders following a federal government directive extending the suspension of Article 140-A of the Constitution.
Jamaat-E-Islami Deputy Emir Liaquat Baloch welcomed the scheduling decision, stating his party would actively participate in upcoming local government elections in both Islamabad and Punjab.
