DWP Warning for Pensioners and Benefits Claimants as August Payment Date Changes
Payments due on August 31 will arrive on August 28, with Universal Credit, State Pension and disability benefits paid early, the government said.
On Friday, the Department for Work and Pensions confirmed that benefit payments due on Monday, August 31, 2026, will instead be made on Friday, August 28, to prevent disruption during the bank holiday.
To avoid disruption during the bank holiday period, the DWP initiated this shift to help families manage expenses before the new school year, when costs for uniforms and travel strain household budgets.
Major benefits affected include Universal Credit, State Pension, Personal Independence Payment , Carer's Allowance, and Disability Living Allowance ; the change applies automatically across the UK without requiring claimant action.
Social Security and Disability Minister Sir Stephen Timms said, "We're pleased to confirm that benefit payments due on the August bank holiday will be paid earlier." The government aims to provide "support and breathing room."
Recipients must budget for the extended gap until their next scheduled payment in September. The government highlighted ongoing cost-of-living measures, including the £1 billion Crisis and Resilience Fund and National Living Wage increases.
