Driver who helped B.C. bus crash victims credits firefighter training
Northern Health said 15 of the 20 injured were discharged after the crash, which triggered Code Orange alerts at two hospitals.
On Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2026, former firefighter Rich Rogers assisted 20 injured passengers after a shuttle bus veered off Highway 39 about four kilometres south of Mackenzie, B.C.
The accident triggered Code Orange mass-casualty declarations at two hospitals as the vehicle struck a tree and flipped into a ditch while Rogers and his family drove past.
Rogers found one person ejected from the bus who appeared not to be breathing and three others unconscious. His 12-year-old son reacted to the chaos, screaming, "No, no, no" over and over.
Northern Health reported Thursday that 15 of the 20 people treated in its facilities have since been discharged. Rogers stayed to help clear debris before catching a ride into town with the fire department.
The shuttle bus was chartered by a contractor for a data centre company. Rogers says he does not think of himself as a hero, hoping his efforts help the injured passengers recover.
