Iran War: Foreign Minister Submits New List of Demands to U.S.
Iran said the United States must lift sanctions and withdraw forces before vessel traffic can resume through the Strait of Hormuz.
- Iran issued a list of demands on August 10, including lifting sanctions and withdrawing American forces, before shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz can resume. The Supreme National Security Council stated the waterway will not reopen until the United States "corrects its behavior."
- Tightening its grip on the Strait, Iran has halted vessel traffic through the waterway with the threat of strikes, while the United States has imposed a blockade on Iranian ports. Getting the Strait open has become the most urgent objective for the United States.
- Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps spokesperson Hossein Mohebbi stated the waterway is "a capability and a source of power that the Islamic Republic of Iran possesses by virtue of its geography." Mohebbi framed the Strait as a strategic asset, not merely an economic route.
- President Donald Trump countered by demanding compensation for past conflicts and told Axios he is "only semi-negotiating" with Iran, describing it as "like a chess game." White House officials view the demands as non-starters.
- Department of Energy data released in August showed the United States strategic oil reserve fell to its lowest level since 1983, underscoring urgency. Vice President Vance said maximizing oil and gas flow from the Strait remains the administration's primary focus.
