Democrats Lead Alaska Governor’s Race in Early Primary Election Vote Counts
On Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026, Florida voters in St. Petersburg headed to the polls for the primary election to determine nominations for mayor, governor, the U.S. Senate, and the U.S. House of Representatives.
Seventeen candidates vied for the Republican gubernatorial nomination after current Gov. Ron DeSantis reached his term limit, with U.S. Rep. Byron Donalds securing an endorsement from President Donald Trump.
Former U.S. Rep. David Jolly faced five challengers for the Democratic nomination, including Dayna Foster and Dotie Joseph, competing in a race analysts labeled "solid Republican."
Polls closed at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, and the Florida Division of Elections prepared to release results after collecting data from across the state throughout the day.
Winners of Tuesday's primary will face off in the November general election to represent Florida in Congress and the statehouse, with officials set to certify final results by Aug. 31.
