Defense chief denounces N. Korea's missile launches at ASEAN defense forum
South Korea said the launches threaten regional security and urged Pyongyang to resume dialogue after Seoul proposed military talks to ease border tensions.
On Thursday, North Korea fired more than 10 short-range ballistic missiles eastward from the Wonsan area, South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff announced at around 12:30 p.m.
These launches follow Seoul's proposal for military talks to address border demarcation, which Pyongyang rejected; tensions escalated after a September 21 land mine blast injured three South Korean soldiers.
Military officials believe the test involved the KN-25 super-large 600-millimeter multiple rocket launcher, which Pyongyang claims can be fitted with Hwasan-31 tactical nuclear warheads.
Defense Minister Kang Shin-chul, attending the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting-Plus in the Philippines, denounced the launches as a "clear violation" of the Armistice Agreement halting the Korean War.
On Wednesday, Kang met with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and the two sides agreed to postpone their bilateral security dialogue from late October to early next year.
Seoul is trying to reduce tensions on the Korean peninsula. However, the de-escalation attempts do not seem to be fruitful. Instead of taking diplomatic steps, Pyongyang is now conducting a rocket test with unusually many missiles.
