Death in lock-up: KL cops await chemistry, pathology reports

Police are awaiting chemistry and pathology reports before determining whether misconduct or an SOP breach occurred in the death of a 42-year-old detainee.

  • On Thursday, Kuala Lumpur police chief Comm Datuk Fadil Marsus confirmed that authorities are investigating the death of detainee Noorizwan Zulkefly, who died at Hospital Canselor Tuanku Muhriz on Oct 1.
  • Police records show the deceased had 44 criminal records, comprising 18 drug-related cases, and admissions to 17 housebreaking and theft incidents in the Cheras district, totaling 60 cases linked to him.
  • Lawyers Rania Aljunied and Wan Nabilah Dina Wan Zamri reported a pathologist documented 21 injuries during autopsy, stating "This indicates severe beatings endured by the victim," while police maintain detention followed standard operating procedures.
  • Pending Chemistry Department and pathology findings, Comm Fadil said the cause of death remains undetermined, urging the public to "be patient and allow the police time to complete the investigation."
  • Bukit Aman's Custody Criminal Investigation Unit and the Integrity and Standards Compliance Department are conducting the inquiry "independently and thoroughly" to determine if any misconduct or breach of standard operating procedures occurred.
