The president of Colombia, Abelardo de la Espriella, has announced a new security protocol that will allow the National Police to enter public universities when the protests result in violent acts. The measure has caused unrest among part of the university community, which considers that it can violate the autonomy and academic freedom recognized to higher education institutions.
The president announced a protocol to allow police intervention in the face of acts of violence, vandalism or terrorism on campus.
The National Police will be the first operational authority to deal with such situations and will be able to intervene on campuses.
