Crossing Paris Climate Target 'only a Matter of Time'

Record sea temperatures and low river flows disrupted navigation, agriculture and water supplies across Europe, Copernicus said.

  • The Copernicus Climate Change Service reported on Monday that September 2026 was the world's second warmest on record, with global temperatures reaching 1.63°C above pre-industrial levels for the second consecutive month.
  • Copernicus director Carlo Buontempo warned that "exceptionally high temperatures" across Europe reflect a new pattern, stating we are in "a new run of months above 1.5 degrees Celsius" with El Niño intensifying into 2027.
  • Western Europe recorded its joint-warmest September at 2.51°C above average, while The Arctic monthly sea ice extent stood approximately 10% below average and Antarctic sea ice reached its third-lowest winter maximum.
  • Prolonged dry conditions caused record-low river flows in the Rhine, Danube, Vistula, and Garonne-Dordogne, disrupting navigation, agriculture, and water supplies across Europe including Spain, Portugal, and Italy.
  • Researcher Mika Rantanen said "current estimates suggest that the 1.5-degree threshold will be reached more permanently towards the end of this decade," as scientists expect elevated temperatures to intensify into 2027.
