Creighton begins anew with Alan Huss taking over for McDermott following 1st losing season in decade
Huss inherits a roster reshaped by departures and transfers after Creighton’s 16-18 season ended a five-year NCAA Tournament run.
On Monday, Creighton Bluejays head coach Alan Huss guides his team into the season opener against Kansas City in Omaha, Neb., following Greg McDermott's retirement after 16 seasons.
The Bluejays aim to recover from last season's 16-18 record, which ended ten consecutive seasons of 20-plus wins and five straight NCAA Tournament appearances after the McDermott-to-Huss transition.
Creighton added 6-10 forward Oswin Erhunmwunse, who averaged 8.3 rebounds at Providence, and returns starters Jasen Green and Austin Swartz, though coaches picked the team seventh in the Big East.
Kansas City also features a new coach, Mark Turgeon, who joins the Roos after a decade at Maryland, seeking improvement after finishing the 2025-26 season with a 4-27 record.
"You sign up for these opportunities," Huss told Omaha WOWT, as the Bluejays face Kansas State on Nov. 10 and Iowa on Nov. 15 before traveling to Las Vegas for the Players Era 16 tournament.
