Dallas Cowboys Hire Longtime Coach Mike Pettine Amid Early Season Defensive Woes
Mike Pettine will help a defense that ranks 31st in yards allowed and 32nd against the run, Schottenheimer said.
On Monday, Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer announced the team hired former Cleveland Browns head coach Mike Pettine as a senior defensive assistant to support defensive coordinator Christian Parker.
Following last Thursday's 24-16 loss to the Buccaneers, the Cowboys rank 31st in yards allowed and 32nd in rushing yards allowed, prompting defensive reinforcement.
Pettine previously worked with Parker in Green Bay, where he served as defensive coordinator from 2018-20; Schottenheimer cited Pettine's experience with the 3-4 defense as a key factor.
Serving as a consultant, the 60-year-old will provide veteran guidance to help Parker, with Schottenheimer emphasizing the role supports existing systems rather than overhauling them.
The Cowboys travel to Green Bay on Sunday, October 18, at 7:20 p.m. for a Sunday Night Football matchup against the Packers, seeking immediate defensive improvement.
