Public Engagement Opens on Proposed Aberdare to Hirwaun Metro Extension
Transport for Wales (TfW) in partnership with Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, has launched public engagement on proposals to extend passenger rail services from Aberdare to Hirwaun. The scheme forms part of the future expansion phases of the South Wales Metro, as outlined in TfW's vision for rail across Wales and Borders - Today, Tomorrow, Together. The extension could see passenger services reintroduced along the existing, unused railway corridor between Aberdare and Hirwaun. If progressed, the project would improve connectivity across the Upper Cynon Valley and onto Pontypridd and Cardiff. Public engagement will run from 12 October to 22 November 2026 and will give local residents, businesses and stakeholders the opportunity to help shape the future of transport in the area. While discussions remain at an early stage, initial studies have already been undertaken as part of the South Wales Metro programme. Proposals currently being explored include: Extending passenger rail services beyond Aberdare to Hirwaun. New railway stations at Llwydcoed and Hirwaun. Facilitating future improvements to the local walking, wheeling and cycling network. Better integration with other public transport services. The scheme aims to improve public transport connectivity in the area, creating better access to jobs, healthcare, and education, while supporting more sustainable travel choices. TfW is encouraging everyone with an interest in the project to have their say and help shape the next stage of its development. Feedback gathered through the engagement will play an important role in informing future design work and business case development, ensuring local communities remain at the heart of proposals as they evolve. Rob Jones, Strategic Development Programme Manager at TfW, said: "This engagement is an important opportunity for local communities to help shape proposals that have the potential to transform connectivity across the Upper Cynon Valley. "Improving access to jobs, education and healthcare can make a real difference to people's lives, and we want to ensure local knowledge and local priorities help inform the next stage of development. "Whether you support the proposals, have questions or concerns, or simply want to share your views, we'd encourage everyone to get involved and have their say."
