Congo’s Ebola outbreak has killed nearly 1,000 people

- On Wednesday, the World Health Organization confirmed the Ebola outbreak in Congo is the fastest-growing on record, with at least 999 deaths according to official data published overnight.
- Driven by the unfamiliar Bundibugyo virus, which lacks approved vaccines or treatments, the outbreak has spread across five provinces, with Ituri remaining the epicenter and accounting for more than 90 per cent of cases.
- Rampant insecurity in eastern Congo complicates disease surveillance, prompting WHO Incident Manager Thierno Bald to reinforce control measures along the River Congo, described as "a crucial transit route requiring rapid implementation of control measures."
- As of Sunday, the DRC Government recorded 2,473 cases and at least 737 patients in isolation, though Mongbwalu and Goma are currently showing some signs of stabilization.
- Despite localized stabilization, Bald explained the agency remains in the "phase of catching up," prioritizing expansion of safe burials and clinical case management in the most active transmission areas.
