People Urged to Use £2 Trick to Help Keep Spiders Out of UK Homes This Autumn
Peppermint, eucalyptus, tea tree and citrus oils can deter spiders, experts said, and the remedies cost as little as £2.
As weather cools this September, UK homes face an influx of spiders during "spider season." Experts suggest that using a £2 essential oil item can help deter these eight-legged visitors.
Male spiders are particularly active this time of year, venturing across floors in search of mates. Most UK spiders live for around a year, but females of some species can survive up to three years indoors, according to the Woodland Trust.
Benjamin Borseth, managing director at Aromantic, said: "Essential oils can be a useful option for people looking for a more natural way to discourage spiders." Peppermint, eucalyptus, and citrus are popular choices.
Regular reapplication is essential as scent fades, Borseth notes. He cautions: "They should not be applied directly to spiders, and homeowners should take care around pets, children and sensitive surfaces."
Oils are not a "guaranteed solution," according to Borseth. Homeowners can further reduce spider presence by "keeping rooms tidy, removing webs, sealing obvious gaps and reducing clutter" to make homes less attractive.
