Christmas shoppers warned over hidden delivery charges as watchdog issues warning
The watchdog said the first price shown online must include mandatory delivery charges, as it warns some retailers still hide extra fees.
Ahead of the busy Christmas shopping period, the CMA is reminding online retailers that mandatory delivery charges must be included in the total price displayed to shoppers.
Under the DMCC Act introduced in 2024, businesses must include unavoidable delivery costs in displayed prices; the CMA warned that unexpected charges make it harder for shoppers to compare deals.
The watchdog identified five hidden delivery charge practices, including waiting until late in the checkout process to reveal costs. "The first price consumers see should be the price they pay," the CMA said.
Retailers, online marketplaces, and search engines must ensure pricing is clear or face enforcement action; under the DMCC Act, the CMA has power to impose financial penalties and require customer refunds.
While many businesses have already taken steps to comply, the CMA continues to monitor pricing practices across the online retail sector and is urging firms to review their websites against published guidance.
