Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations has been given a Gen Z makeover
The adaptation pairs a glossary and online safety guidance after a survey found 70% of parents struggle to understand teen slang.
Tesco Mobile released a Gen Z audiobook adaptation titled "Bare Expectations" on Spotify and Apple Music to help families navigate rapidly evolving teen language and digital communication.
Research of 2,000 parents with children between 10 and 16 found 70 per cent struggle to understand teen slang, with phrases like "I was dreadfully frightened" now translated to "I was absolutely cooked."
Among confusing expressions, 37 per cent of parents struggle with "gyatt" and "finsta," while 49 per cent worry about inappropriate content, 48 per cent fear strangers, and 40 per cent worry about bullying.
The campaign supports Safe Start, a new offering combining parental controls and AI-powered social media monitoring through Sway.ly to help families bridge generational language gaps with confidence.
Kurupt FM's MC Grindah provided the audiobook reading while author Chloe Combi advised on the project, helping parents initiate conversations about online safety with greater confidence.
