Chargers bet on the trenches, adding an edge rusher and a center-turned-guard in the draft
Los Angeles added a pass rusher and a projected interior lineman after injuries and free-agent losses thinned both lines.
The Los Angeles Chargers addressed critical line needs during the 2026 NFL draft by selecting Miami defensive end Akheem Mesidor in the first round on Thursday and Florida offensive lineman Jake Slaughter with the 63rd pick in the second round on Friday.
Ineffective play on the offensive line plagued the Chargers last season, culminating in quarterback Justin Herbert being sacked six times in a 16-3 wild-card playoff loss to the New England Patriots.
Mesidor recorded 12 1/2 sacks and 17 1/2 tackles for loss as a senior, demonstrating versatility. "I think I'm adding a really good piece to that D-line," Mesidor said.
On Saturday, general manager Joe Hortiz secured five additional players, including Mississippi State wide receiver Brenen Thompson and Arizona safety Genesis Smith, deepening roster depth.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh continues emphasizing a competitive roster, frequently stating, "Competitors welcome," as new additions aim to improve the team's standing in the AFC West.
