Ceremony at Blaine’s Peace Arch to mark anniversary of 9/11
Samson says he attended five 9/11 firefighter funerals and will mark the anniversary quietly after a New York City trip in August.
- A few days ago, Maple Ridge Fire Chief Dave Samson watched a video of New York firefighters racing into a tower and recognized the name on the turnout coat—John Patrick Burnside, whom Samson attended the funeral for in 2001 days after the Sept. 11 attacks.
- Back in 2001, Samson traveled to New York as a young firefighter from Burnaby with 19 colleagues from the Greater Vancouver area to support the 343 firefighters who lost their lives and attend line of duty death services.
- Samson attended the funeral of firefighter Lennie Ragaglia, a 36-year-old whose son has since become a firefighter at the same firehouse; Ragaglia was stationed at the Pride of Midtown on 8th Avenue in Times Square, where Engine 54, Ladder 4, and Battalion 9 lost their entire crew of 15.
- At the end of August, Samson returned to New York City to visit the firehouse and view the wall of photos of the 15 fallen firefighters, reminding the current crew the 343 FDNY firefighters remain in his heart. Deputy Fire Chief Ben Wilson noted a regional ceremony will take place at Peace Arch Park in White Rock at 11 a.m. on Sept. 11.
