The current world champion left the 'pole position' and took the first place, while the leader of the championship, the Italian Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia), sank in the platoon, descending to the 15th position.
The sprint test in Jerez could hardly have had a more exciting outcome. The events in Andalusia were spiced up by rain, which forced the riders to change bikes. Marc Marquez slipped before changing bikes, but fell in just the right place, allowing him to quickly drive into the garages and then advance to first place on a bike with wet tires. Francesco Bagnaia and Franco Morbidelli also made it to the podium.
