Car explosion in Totowa, N.J. sends debris flying into homes, across street
Authorities say a gas cylinder in the trunk may have triggered the blast, and one driver was hospitalized after the vehicle was destroyed.
- On Monday, a car exploded in the Hickory Hill gated community of Totowa, New Jersey, injuring the 28-year-old driver around 5:30 a.m. on Congressional Lane. The blast shook residents awake and damaged nearby homes.
- Mayor John Coiro said investigators preliminarily believe an acetylene tank in the driver's trunk caused the explosion. The Totowa Police Department and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives determined it was not a bomb.
- Resident Sheldon Blaine reported that fragments from the destroyed vehicle scattered across the street and into a nearby pool. "The door was blown off the, the lock part was blown in," Blaine said.
- Acting Police Chief Brian Mulroony said the 28-year-old driver walked out of the vehicle and was hospitalized for "treatment and observation." Investigators do not suspect foul play, though the investigation remains ongoing.
- In a Facebook post Monday, Assemblyman Al Barlas thanked first responders for their "swift response and professionalism." Officials are assessing structural damage to neighboring residences caused by the morning blast.
