Individual Dies Day After Plasma Donation, but Officials Say No Link Found
CBS said the donor appeared fine after leaving the clinic and Health Canada found no equipment failure or other procedural problems.
Canadian Blood Services confirmed that a long-time donor and volunteer died the day after making a plasma donation earlier this fall, stating the death was not linked to the donation process.
Federal regulations require collectors like CBS to report any donor death within 72 hours to Health Canada, marking the first time CBS has reported such an incident since at least 2018.
CBS chief executive officer Graham Sher said the organization reviewed the donor's records and spoke with their family, who confirmed doctors attributed the death to "natural causes."
The Ottawa-based organization declined to disclose the specific date or location of the death, citing privacy concerns for the family, while Health Canada advised no follow-up was required.
Plasma donation safety has faced increased scrutiny in the past year following investigations into deaths at facilities operated by Spanish company Grifols, as demand for plasma-derived treatments grows globally.
