Brewers rout the Rays, one win away from World Series title
Milwaukee became the first team to score eight runs with two outs in a World Series inning and moved within one win of the title.
On Monday night, the Milwaukee Brewers scored eight runs with two outs in the fifth inning of Game 3 at Tropicana Field, establishing a 10-0 lead over the Tampa Bay Rays.
With two outs and the Rays one strike from escaping, Brice Turang hit a 106-mph scorcher off Cam Booser, sparking seven consecutive two-out hits that broke the game open.
Setting a World Series record, the Brewers surpassed the previous high of seven runs with two outs, which Boston set in the 2007 opener against Colorado.
Building on earlier one-run victories at American Family Field, the Brewers took a 3-0 lead in the best-of-seven World Series, putting the Rays in a historically dire position.
Of 25 teams to trail 0-3 in a World Series, 21 were swept and four extended the series to a fifth game, according to MLB records, leaving Tampa Bay facing long odds.
