Brewers Edge Padres 3-2 in NLDS Opener that Features Bizarre Play in 9th Inning
William Contreras hit the go-ahead homer, and the Brewers survived a ninth-inning roof catch after Milwaukee’s bullpen held San Diego to 2 runs.
- On Saturday, the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the San Diego Padres 3-2 in Game 1 of their NLDS at American Family Field, holding on after a controversial ninth-inning roof-assisted out.
- A controversial ninth-inning play involving the stadium roof halted the Padres' rally when Ty France's high flyball struck the structure before landing in outfielder Jackson Chourio's glove for an out.
- William Contreras broke the tie with a seventh-inning home run, while Jackson Chourio added a two-run blast, marking his fifth career postseason homer in his 13th playoff game.
- Securing the save, reliever Trevor Megill said he did not previously know the ground rule; Padres manager Craig Stammen noted the team had joked about the scenario earlier that day.
- The best-of-five series continues Sunday, Oct. 4, featuring a pitching matchup between San Diego's Michael King and Milwaukee's Logan Henderson as the Brewers look to extend their advantage.
