South Africa's President Appoints Makhubu as New Head of Tax Agency
Makhubu brings more than 17 years of senior leadership experience and helped shape SARS Vision 2024, the presidency said.
- On Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed Dr. Ngobani Johnstone Makhubu as Commissioner of the South African Revenue Service , effective May 1, 2026, following a unanimous recommendation by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana's selection panel.
- Makhubu, serving as Deputy Commissioner since 2023, succeeds outgoing Commissioner Edward Kieswetter, whose two-year contract concludes on April 30, 2026. Ramaphosa noted that sound succession planning improves the state's capability.
- With over 17 years of leadership experience, Makhubu helped implement the Vision 2024 strategy alongside Kieswetter, which achieved a compounded annual revenue growth rate of 7.6% and increased voluntary compliance by 3.4 percentage points.
- SARS recently recorded a historic net revenue collection of R2.010 trillion, a milestone Commissioner Kieswetter attributed to the collective efforts of more than 14 500 employees.
- The agency recently announced its Modernisation 3.0 update to create unique digital identities for taxpayers, using biometric and two-factor authentication to secure all interactions with the revenue service.
