BRA Day 2026: Empowering breast cancer patients through information and options
The campaign says 32,400 Canadian women are expected to be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2026, underscoring the need for clearer reconstruction guidance.
- On Wednesday, Oct. 21, 2026, The American Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Plastic Surgery Foundation celebrated Breast Reconstruction Awareness Day USA to ensure patients understand their reconstruction options.
- BRA Day was created to close the information gap regarding breast reconstruction, as many patients are never fully informed about available choices like implants or using their own tissue.
- An estimated 32,400 Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in 2026, though survival rates are nearly 85 per cent; monthly self-examination remains vital, as the Cancer Agency notes 40 per cent are found that way.
- The campaign raised about $100,000 in 2026 through corporate sponsors and local events. "For 14 years, BRA Day has served as a powerful reminder that education is one of the most important tools we can provide patients," said Sara Dickie, President of The PSF.
- Toronto plastic surgeon Mitchell Brown launched the movement in 2011 at Women's College and Toronto General hospitals; the idea has since grown into an international effort with events across Canada and in more than 30 countries.
