According to a study, fishing with heavy nets on the sea floor destroys important habitats, damages the climate - and also pollutes society financially.The so-called bottom trawl fishing, in which heavy nets are dragged over the sea floor, costs the society in Europe up to 16 billion euros annually, writes a research team from the USA and Canada in the journal "Ocean & Coastal Management".
Greece has taken the first step. The European Commission plans to phase out bottom trawling in all marine protected areas by 2030. In view of the results of this study, it is becoming less and less clear why this is not already the case...
