Bob Motzko Out as Gopher Men's Ice Hockey Coach, Sources Say
Bob Motzko ends eight-year tenure after an 11-22-3 season, the program's worst record in over 50 years, prompting a search for new leadership at Minnesota hockey.
On Wednesday, the University of Minnesota announced Bob Motzko is out after eight seasons as men's hockey head coach, and the sides mutually agreed to part ways.
After a 11-22-3 campaign, the Gophers 2025-26 team suffered their first losing season in 16 years and worst on-ice season in more than 50 years.
In eight seasons at Minnesota, Motzko compiled a 172-104-24 record and led the team to back-to-back NCAA Frozen Fours, including a 2023 runner-up finish.
Mark Coyle, Minnesota Athletic Director, said the school will immediately begin a nationwide search, one day after Brad Frost was fired, creating another vacancy at 3M Arena at Mariucci.
Motzko, who turns 65 next week, had two years remaining on a contract extended through 2027-28 and rebuilt attendance while recruiting NHL prospects.
