Bo Nix’s late-game comebacks keep rescuing Broncos, but solving slow starts remains a top priority
Bo Nix has 10 career fourth-quarter rallies, but Denver has been outscored 40-10 in first halves this season, officials said.
Following a 30-26 comeback win over the Los Angeles Rams last Sunday, the Denver Broncos travel to Santa Clara, California, for their Week 4 matchup against undefeated San Francisco on Sunday.
Despite holding a 2-1 record, the Broncos have struggled early this season, failing to secure a first down on seven of their 15 first-half drives while being outscored 40-10 in opening halves.
Quarterback Nix has led 10 career final-quarter rallies, ranking first in multiple fourth-quarter categories including 20 touchdowns when trailing by one score. He leads his 2024 draft class with 8,311 passing yards and 58 touchdowns.
Coach Sean Payton and offensive coordinator Davis Webb are addressing sluggish starts by revamping the ground game, which has produced only 243 rushing yards this season, second-worst in the NFL.
Receiver Courtland Sutton said the team aims to "start faster" against San Francisco while pairing early execution with their proven fourth-quarter resilience. "If we can pair together a fast start plus finishing strong, that is where I think the magic is going to come from," Sutton said.
