Bill Fennelly, Iowa State's Longtime Women's Basketball Coach, Says He'll Retire After This Season
The winningest coach in Iowa State history said he is ending a 39-year head coaching career after the 2026-27 season.
On Monday, October 12, 2026, longtime Iowa State women's basketball coach Bill Fennelly announced he will retire at the conclusion of the 2026-27 season, ending his 32-year tenure with the Cyclones.
During his 39-year head coaching career, Fennelly transformed the Cyclones from a struggling program into a nationally respected brand, amassing 822 total victories including 656 at Iowa State and leading the team to 24 NCAA Tournament appearances.
Iowa State University Endowed Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard called Fennelly "a legend," noting his impact transformed the program and fan attendance grew from 310 in his first game to top 10 nationally for over 25 straight years.
The announcement coincides with broader Iowa State athletics transition, as Director of Athletics Jamie Pollard is also set to retire by June 30, 2027, prompting a nationwide search for his successor.
Fennelly emphasized the focus remains on his players for the coming season, while Pollard looks forward to seeing a banner hung in Hilton Coliseum rafters permanently memorializing his lasting impact.
