Worst Roads for Crashes Revealed

AAMI said the index reviewed more than 394,000 claims and found nose-to-tail crashes were the most common collision type.

  • Springvale Road in Glen Waverley, Melbourne, Victoria, is Australia's top crash hotspot, according to the 2026 AAMI Crash Index. It replaced Plenty Road, Bundoora, as the most frequent accident site for the first time in eight years.
  • AAMI Motor Prevention Manager Mary Kennedy attributed high crash rates to heavy traffic, multiple lanes, and major intersections. These factors create "perfect conditions for everyday driving mistakes," she said.
  • Nose-to-Tail impacts account for 28 per cent of crashes based on analysis of more than 394,000 insurance claims lodged in 2025. Failure to give way follows at 23 per cent.
  • Data shows mornings and Fridays are peak crash periods nationally, with male drivers and those aged 65 years and older involved most frequently. AAMI recommends motorists remain patient and avoid distractions.
  • Nine of the top 10 national crash sites are located in Melbourne, illustrating the city's dominance in the index. Only Pennant Hills Road in Carlingford, NSW, appeared outside Victoria.
