Attacks on Health Care in Conflict Zones Averaging More than Four a Day in 2026, World Health Organization Says
On Friday, the World Health Organization reported more than 900 attacks on healthcare between January and August 2026, causing at least 900 deaths and more than 1,400 injuries across conflict zones.
Since the WHO began tracking surveillance in 2018, more than 10,400 attacks have been verified across 29 countries; Musani stated not a single one has entered an accountability process.
In Gaza, all 36 hospitals have been damaged, while 37% of Sudan's health facilities remain non-functional; a study of 69 attacks in Syria found outpatient consultations fell by 51% immediately after incidents.
Attacks undermine responses to disease outbreaks, particularly in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where 12 verified attacks since an Ebola outbreak was declared in May disrupted surveillance and treatment efforts.
Health facilities are protected under the Geneva Conventions, yet Musani warned, "What we are witnessing are multiple forms of violence," citing heavy weapons use and 94 detained healthcare workers.
