ASEAN envoy ends Myanmar trip with no public Suu Kyi meeting
Myanmar said Maria Theresa Lazaro and Tin Maung Swe discussed restoring the country’s ASEAN role as 81-year-old Aung San Suu Kyi remained out of view.
On Thursday, ASEAN special envoy Foreign Minister Secretary Maria Theresa Lazaro concluded a two-day visit to Myanmar without meeting detained democratic leader Aung San Suu Kyi.
Myanmar has been in turmoil since the 2021 military coup, a conflict that killed an estimated 100,000 people and displaced more than 3.5 million citizens.
Lazaro and Foreign Minister Tin Maung Swe "held substantive discussions on ways to restore Myanmar's original role and rights within ASEAN," according to Myanmar's foreign ministry statement.
Despite the lack of envoy access, authorities recently allowed the 81-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate to receive a "sealed diplomatic communication" from Britain's King Charles and a 20-minute call with her son.
Lazaro told Bilyonaryo she asked about Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's situation, reporting the response was "quite positive that she's doing well" despite no direct meeting occurring.
