Are there ‘positive’ effects of paranormal experiences?

Researchers found 51% of participants reported positive long-term effects, while 20% reported negative impacts after experiences such as near-death episodes and seeing ghosts.

  • A study published yesterday in PLOS One found that over half of participants reported non-ordinary experiences—such as sensing a presence or visions—promoted positive long-term effects, according to study leader Ronald Fischer.
  • Based on a sample of over 5,000 participants, Fischer, from the Instituto de Pesquisa e Ensino, Sao Paulo, noted that such experiences are "far more common" in the general population than clinical diagnosis rates suggest.
  • Data indicates that 39% of respondents were alone during their experience, while 57% reported being awake and alert. One in five reported negative impacts, and 25% noted suffering or discomfort.
  • Study co-author Dr. Jorge Moll stated that "how a person interprets an unusual experience matters more" than the event itself. Researchers aim to normalize these experiences and reduce stigma around them.
  • If individuals feel these experiences interfere with daily activities, "they should talk to a professional or seek help," research assistant Pedro Fortes advised, ensuring safety alongside meaning-making exploration.
