Archaeologists Uncover Colossal Statues of Ramses II in Egypt

Archaeologists found two colossal royal statues and a pink granite block with Ramses II titles, and one statue may have stood 8.5 metres tall.

  • A resident's accidental discovery in the village of Behbeit El-Hagar, located in Egypt's Gharbia Governorate, led to the unearthing of fragments from a massive statue of Pharaoh Ramses.
  • Known as Ramses the Great, the Pharaoh ruled over 3,000 years ago and was celebrated for extensive construction of monumental temples during his reign.
  • Researchers estimated the complete statue, featuring a stone head measuring approximately 5 feet tall, could have originally stood approximately 28 feet high including its base.
  • Following the resident's alert to local officials, Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities launched an excavation that also revealed a second royal statue fragment measuring nearly eight feet.
  • The Bible links Ramses to the Exodus story of Moses and the Israelites, though researchers continue investigating whether these statues originally stood at the site or were relocated.
