Teen Suspect in Shooting Near University of Iowa Campus Arrested in Metro Atlanta, Police Say
Police say the suspect fired six rounds into a crowded Pedestrian Mall after a fight involving as many as 40 people.
On Monday, the United States Marshals Service arrested Damarian M. Jones, 17, of Cedar Rapids near Atlanta, Georgia, in connection with the April 19 shooting at Iowa City's Downtown Pedestrian Mall that injured five people.
During a fight involving roughly 40 people on April 19, police say Jones obtained a firearm and fired six times into a crowd, striking five people according to authorities.
Jones faces five counts of attempted murder, three counts of willful injury assault causing serious injury, and two counts of willful injury assault causing bodily injury. One victim remains in critical condition after suffering a life-threatening head injury.
A GoFundMe fundraiser for University of Iowa student Miranda Peters, who was shot in the head, has raised more than $200,000 of its $250,000 goal to support her recovery.
The University of Iowa Office of Campus Safety vowed to increase police presence in downtown Iowa City, with additional officers conducting co-patrols alongside the Iowa City Police Department to ensure the district remains safe.
