An abandoned apartment building is burning in Port Alberni

Fire crews found no one inside and called in RCMP after the boarded-up building with no power caught fire.

  • Multiple fire departments responded to a blaze at the former Wintergreen Apartments in Port Alberni on Tuesday morning, with flames visible from the second floor of the 3600-block of Fourth Avenue building just before 8 a.m.
  • Port Alberni Fire Chief Mike Owens deemed the fire suspicious because the vacant building had no power and was boarded up, prompting officials to notify Port Alberni RCMP immediately.
  • Firefighters conducted a thorough sweep of the abandoned structure and confirmed no people were inside; Fourth Avenue between Burde and Bute Streets remains closed as crews continue suppression efforts.
  • To reach remaining hotspots, Owens announced an excavator will arrive to dismantle parts of the structure, allowing firefighters safe access to areas still burning.
  • The investigation into the blaze remains ongoing as authorities secure the area, with emergency responders continuing to manage the site following the initial reports that brought multiple departments to the scene.
