Amazon cloud computing outage knocks out Zoom, Roblox and many other online services

The AWS outage began around 3 a.m. ET, affecting 79 services including Snapchat and Roblox, with over 2,681 complaints reported early Monday, AWS said recovery is underway.

  • DownDetector recorded over 11 million user reports at more than 2,500 companies and nearly 15,000 incident reports at the peak, while Canvas outage affected 50% of college and university students.
  • Around 6 a.m. Eastern Time, Amazon Web Services said it saw recovery across most services, and later after 5 p.m. applied initial mitigation with significant recovery signs.
  • Cybersecurity expert Patrick Burgess warned that reliance on a handful of cloud compute companies makes outages broadly impactful, with past incidents like the late 2021 outage and Google Cloud disruptions showing systemic risks.
